Golf, Cigars, and Scotch
Balancing Fatherhood, Friendship, and Fine-Living
By Dr. Corey Holmes
In this thoughtful exploration of modern fatherhood, Dr. Corey W. Holmes draws on his unique background as a diplomat, educator, and lifestyle enthusiast to offer a refreshing perspective on balancing life’s refined pleasures with the profound responsibilities of parenting. This book provides fathers with a practical framework for integrating personal passions—like a day on the golf course, appreciating fine spirits, or enjoying a contemplative cigar—into a meaningful approach to raising children and nurturing friendships. Rather than viewing these pursuits as separate from family life, Dr. Holmes demonstrates how they can become powerful vehicles for teaching patience, craftsmanship, moderation, and deeper connection. Through engaging anecdotes, actionable advice, and insights drawn from his global experiences, Dr. Holmes guides readers in transforming everyday leisure activities into opportunities for mentorship and memory-making. The book offers specific strategies for creating family-friendly versions of traditionally adult pastimes, hosting gatherings that foster meaningful conversation, and finding moments where personal interests can naturally intersect with parenting responsibilities.
Perfect for fathers seeking to cultivate both personal fulfillment and family enrichment, this guide presents a balanced vision of fatherhood that embraces both joy and purpose. Ultimately, Dr. Holmes invites readers to create a lasting legacy that honors life’s pleasures while shaping the next generation—one hole, one cigar, one glass, and one kid at a time.

U.S. Foreign Service Family Matters
Educating the Children Behind American Diplomacy
By Nazia Quraishi
What happens behind the official titles, diplomatic appointments, and international postings? In this collection of fifteen essays, three brothers—Ibrahim, Musa, and Noah—offer a child-centered perspective on growing up in a U.S. Foreign Service family. Written between the ages of nine and nineteen in response to Foreign Service Youth Foundation prompts, their pieces explore travel, identity, belonging, and what it means to come of age between cultures.
From the consular visa lines in western Africa, to the museums and desert landscapes of the Gulf, to the historic streets of Europe, these young writers reflect on adaptation, friendship, cultural humility, and the meaning of home. Their mother, Nazia Quraishi—a former chemistry teacher and Foreign Service spouse—frames their essays with her own reflections on diplomatic life, sacrifice, and the hidden tests of privilege. She extends the conversation to southeast Asia, where online scam operations reveal victims behind apparent criminals, and to Big Bend National Park, where questions of border security and technology raise deeper questions about power and proportionality.
Together, these essays remind us that belonging is not simply about learning how to enter someone else’s world—it is also about having a place where we are allowed to return to ourselves.
